Description
The NPI is a Health Insurance Portability
and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Administrative Standard. NPI is a unique
identification number for covered health care providers which was created to
help send health information electronically more effectively. The HIPAA
Administrative Simplification provisions required the use of a standard, unique
health identifier for each health care provider. The 2004 NPI Final Rule made
NPIs the standard.
